Wednesday Wire

8.7.24

Today is Wednesday, August 7th, and these are the top stories making headlines halfway through the week:

  • The annual Florida Python Challenge kicks off Friday, offering participants a chance to win $10,000 for capturing the most Burmese pythons. While the contest won’t end until the 18th, current odds say the winner will have a mullet, a restraining order, or both.

  • 21-year-old Avi Schiffmann has created an AI-powered necklace called “friend,” designed to keep you company. Schiffmann says he named the necklace “friend” because he felt it was a bit on the nose to call it “my precious.”

  • Vice President Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 presidential election. Harris says Walz is exactly what she’s looking for in a VP, adding, “he looks like the kinda guy you can blame things on.”

  • A Catholic priest in Austria has confessed to producing crystal meth in his parish rectory. Questions were raised after the priest told a congregation of third graders that the first commandment was thou shalt not get high on your own supply.

  • A federal judge ruled this week that Google Search is an illegal monopoly and acted like one to maintain its dominance. For more on the judge’s ruling — Google it.

  • California researchers have deployed "SharkEye," an AI-powered drone system designed to monitor coastal waters for shark activity. The California team was able to develop the system following their successful efforts monitoring Beverly Hills for cougar activity.

  • Pitbull and Florida Atlantic University made a deal granting the musician full naming rights for the university’s football stadium, which will be known as Pitbull Stadium. If the name sounds familiar, it’s probably because you used to know Pitbull Stadium as Michael Vick’s house.
